Merchant City

History & Heritage

Merchant City is one of Glasgow’s oldest quarters dating back to the 1750s when it was home to the warehouses of wealthy merchants who shipped tobacco, sugar and tea.

In the 19th century, the area became home to Glasgow’s central fruit, vegetable and cheese markets. Merchant Square itself is housed in part of the Old Fruitmarket.

In recent years Merchant City has enjoyed a renaissance and is now home to some of the city’s most exciting independent bars, restaurants, galleries and boutiques.
