About Merchant Square
Merchant Square - History & Heritage
Merchant Square was once part of the old Fruitmarket in the Merchant City, one of Glasgow’s oldest quarters dating back to the 1750s.
Glasgow’s expansion in the 19th century meant it became the second city of the United Kingdom and the British Empire, and the Merchant City became home to the warehouses of wealthy merchants who shipped tobacco, sugar and tea.
The old area was a bustling district of large warehouses, shipping companies, offices, distilleries and clothing manufacturers as well as fruit, vegetable, cheese and fish markets.
Today’s Merchant Square has retained much of the historical character and architecture of that era, and enjoys a renaissance as a sophisticated, popular destination for eating, drinking and entertainment. It’s now home to nine bars, restaurants and leisure venues, and hosts some of Glasgow’s biggest events such as the city’s annual Hogmanay party.
